Anyone that has been in IT long enough has seen trends come and go. Some trends last and profoundly impact how we do our day-to-day work (virtualization for example). Other ones are hot for a time and then die off (Lotus Notes anyone?)
Do you remember “Back in the day” when every company (including a small mom-and-pop) had their own DC (sometimes that was just a broom closet!)
Then AWS (and other players) came around and people started to migrate everything to this new world - the public Cloud. Circle up to the year 2020, and you now have multiple public cloud options for your compute/vm’s and applications. It can be overwhelming to those that are in the trenches of day-to-day SysAdmin, Security, and Development work.
Companies have been trying to remove on-premises DC’s and go all-in on the public cloud but then the costs start showing up and they’ve realized it’s really not saving them that much money. Flexible, yes? Cheap? Not necessarily.
So then a new-ish model has emerged - Hybrid Cloud. Some stuff on the public cloud, some stuff in an on-prem DC, and connectivity between the two.
What option is correct? Which one is best? It all depends on the business use and requirements.
One thing for sure, leveraging CNA (Cloud-Native Applications) development allows you to seamlessly migrate from one place to the other with minimal downtime.
