As the journey towards cloud-native continues, the one aspect that has lagged behind somewhat has been the CI/CD area of cloud-native. Namely around CD - Continous Delivery.
For those not familiar with Continous Delivery here is their definition:
What is Continuous Delivery (CD)?
CD is a software engineering approach in which teams produce software in short cycles, ensuring that the software can be reliably released at any time. The rise of microservices, cloud native architectures has caused a corollary rise in continuous delivery practices. This is related to CI/CD that includes Continuous Integration (CI) -- the practice of merging all developer working copies to a shared mainline several times a day.
A good number of companies have the CI part down fairly well but the CD part is what throws them for a loop. Automating software deploys can become complex really quickly and if not architected well can be difficult to troubleshoot when something does not go right. On top of that, you add all the different projects that deal with CD and for DevOps/SRE teams/Developers it’s mind-boggling. What is a good CI/CD tool to use? Where can I get community and enterprise support? Will this project die out and now we’re left with something with no future? All those questions and more are on the minds of anyone working with Open Source projects.
If you are involved with cloud-native work then you might be familiar with the CNCF Foundation. The CNCF Foundation has grown in popularity and it has become the defacto standard for Cloud Native Compute and it’s related technologies. That left a gap in some areas and the CD Foundation was founded in early 2019 to focus primarily on technologies related to the CI/CD stack.
The initial projects that comprise the CD Foundation are Jenkins, Jenkins X, Spinnaker, and Tekton. Similar to the CNFC they also have a landscape board so you can see all the projects/companies involved in the CD landscape.
Keep an eye out on the CD Foundation. Will be exciting to see the growth of the organization and the community around CI/CD.

Tech Geek Link of the Week:

This is pretty slick. GitHub is being a little more transparent on service disruptions, site availability, and post-incident reports. Glad to see them putting this out there as it is a great way for DevOps/SRE professionals to learn how large organizations handle issues.
